COVINGTON, Ky. -- A suspected burglar died after apparently shooting himself while running from police Thursday afternoon.

Officers responded to an East Sixth Street property at about 4:45 p.m. for a report of a burglary in progress, which the homeowner was watching remotely through his home security system, police said in a news release.

As police began to surround the house, the suspect exited a side door and ran away, according to the news release. Officers chased the suspect, who they said was carrying a handgun.

The man ran across the street to Mother of God Church, where he jumped over a short wall and fell into a mulch bed, police said. As he fell, officers heard one shot. When they caught up, they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police weren't immediately sure whether the gunshot was on purpose or accidental.

No officers fired any shots, police said.

The suspect was driven to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where staff pronounced him dead.

Police were still investigating the motive for the burglary and the nature of the gunshot.

They did not immediately identify the man, pending notification of family.
