COVINGTON, Ky. -- Want to help install Covington’s latest mural? Here’s your chance!

Muralist Shaylen Amanda Broughton will be in town this weekend to install a mural honoring late Covington actress Una Merkel with the help of volunteers. The painting will be in the Arcade at 23 W. Pike St across from Braxton Brewing.

Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers will be treated to free ice cream on Pike Street at 5 p.m. Friday. and drinks and snacks will be provided on Saturday and Sunday.

No prior painting or mural experience is required. Broughton will be on site to direct and assist volunteers. Those interested in volunteering can call Jerod Theobald at (859) 291-3569 or RSVP at the event’s Facebook page here.

Merkel, who was born in Covington in 1903, was a famous film, stage, television, and radio actress. She was a Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

The mural was designed by Durham Brand & Co. and funded by Cov10. It will be unveiled at the Covington art festival Art Off Pike on Sept. 25.

This comes just a day after Kroger celebrated the creation of its "Love the Cov" community mural on its newly renovated store on Madison Avenue Thursday.
