School locked down, park closed in hunt for teen

WOODLAWN, Ohio -- A school went on lockdown and a park briefly closed Monday afternoon as police searched for a teen with a handgun.

It started at about 2:30 p.m. as a call for problems between a mother and son on Faxon Court, according to the Woodlawn Police Department. When officers got to the home, the 17-year-old was gone, and his mother told police he'd taken a 9 mm pistol with him.

They spotted the teen and chased him on foot, but he got away, the police department said.

Wyoming, Evendale, Springfield Township and Cincinnati police helped in the search, along with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and officers from Great Parks of Hamilton County.

Woodlawn Elementary School was locked down and Glenwood Gardens Park was temporarily closed.

"You want to take every precaution that you can," Woodlawn Police Chief Jeffrey Witte said. "We did have officers that deployed assault rifles."

A Hamilton County sheriff's helicopter and some residents helped spot the teen near Faxon Court and Brookhaven Avenue just after 4 p.m.

"Two officers came out from the same area, followed him into that back yard across the street, then maybe five minutes later, brought him out, placed him in the car and took him away," neighbor Anthony Chenault said.

The teen was arrested on several felony and misdemeanor counts. According to Witte, the teen had the pistol, with one live round in its magazine and more rounds in his pocket.
