SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio – A worker mowing a lawn was killed Thursday when his riding mower tipped over and pinned him underwater in a pond, according to police.

The accident happened in the backyard of a home in the 10000 block of McKelvey Road, police said. The house sits on top of a hill and the lawn slopes to a pond.

A 911 caller identified himself as the victim's co-worker and said he had been trimming when he saw the mower in the water. He said he couldn't see the victim so he went into the water.

"I felt his leg a couple of feet deep. He wasn't moving," the caller said. "I don't know how long he's been in the water."

The victim's name has not been released.

Lawnmowing accidents kill 75 people nationwide every year, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
