NORWOOD, Ohio — Norwood High School’s Athletic Department wants to make student-athletes leaders on the court and in the community.

Captain’s Council, a group for athletes from all backgrounds, was created so students could come together to focus on personal growth, according to Assistant Athletic Director Jen List.

List started the group with physical education teacher Brian Pitzer with the idea that the group would help create a positive culture within the school’s athletic department.

“In society we need people who are ready to lead and be positive … this gives them that preparation,” List said.

Senior Lilly Peter said being in the group has helped her realize how she can take responsibility for her actions in everyday scenarios.

“I’ve always loved playing for Norwood High School, but this is definitely something that helps improve the overall impact of what we can all do,” Peter said.

Captain’s Council is fundraising for the next step: Its Leadership Library. The library would allow students to get books that focus on developing core leadership values.

“We’re looking to raise another $750 in books and bean bag chairs and stuff we can take down to the elementary to make it more fun and engaging,” List said.
