MOUNT HEALTHY, Ohio -- Mount Healthy Police said two children were struck by a car as they were walking to school Tuesday morning.

The two small children were walking through a crosswalk at Hamilton Avenue and Adams Road when a car turned right and hit them, police said. Both children were taken to the hospital but suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Mt. Healthy Police Chief Vince Demasi said the intersection, not far from South Elementary School, is busy with morning traffic when children are walking alone or in groups, sometimes when it's still dark outside.

The Hamilton Avenue and Adams Road intersection, like many in Mt. Healthy, are "no turn on red" intersections during school hours. The car that hit the children turned right at a red light, police said.

"This happens quite frequently because the right turn on red, people think they don't have to stop at all before entering the crosswalk area," Demasi said. "In this particular case, both kids were relatively small, a little difficult to see, especially if you were in a hurry trying to get to work. The message today is simple, please slow down, especially in the morning hours between 7 and 9."
