FAIRFIELD, Ohio -- The Fairfield Fire Department is adding a new tool to its toolbox: The bulletproof vest.

Deputy Chief Tom Wagner said Wednesday it's an unfortunate necessity of a modern era in which firefighters can be called to a wide variety of dangerous scenes.

"We never know what we are going to respond to, as we have just seen here lately," he said. "We had another school shooting, and we want our personnel to be prepared with … the equipment that is going to, if need be, save their life."

Wagner's firefighters will be required to wear the vests when they respond to certain types of scenes, including assaults, shootings, stabbings and medical incidents at bars.
