A dog attack on Sunday left reigning Flying Pig women’s marathon champion Caitlin Keen terrified twice over: For her life and for her running career.

“It took me a really long time to get here, and I don’t want that to be taken away by something as stupid as this,” she said through tears as she recalled the incident.

Keen said she had been training for the Olympic Trials on Trinity Trail in Fort Worth, Texas, when a pit bull-type dog in a puffy vest attacked her. Its teeth fastened around her right arm, leaving two broad puncture wounds below her shoulder, and it pulled her to the ground.

She got up and tried to run, but it pulled her down again. Only the help of another runner on the trail allowed her to drive it away.

“It sucks,” she said. “I just don’t want to be scared … And can you imagine if this happened to a kid that’s 40 pounds? They wouldn’t survive.”

An ambulance took her to have the bites treated. The dog was taken to Fort Worth Animal Care and Control, according to Fort Worth reporter MaryAnn Martinez.

It will remain in quarantine for 10 days.
