Pleasant Ridge rallies for safer roads

CINCINNATI -- At the corner of Ridge Avenue and Montgomery Road lies one of the busiest -- and most dangerous -- intersections in the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood. Neighborhood residents rallied Friday to remind local drivers to practice courtesy on the road.

Pleasant Ridge Neighborhood Officer George Engelman said the most common traffic issues in the area are speeding and hit-and-runs involving parked cars, but close calls with pedestrians are also a problem.

"A lot of times, what people try to do is they try to beat the light," he said. "The light is turning yellow and red, and pedestrians are already in the motion to start to cross."

That impulse to jump the gun can place both drivers and pedestrians in danger, he said.

Officer Engelman and the Pleasant Ridge Community Council said the most immediate solutions to neighborhood traffic risks include repainting lines on the road so that they are more visible.

Cincinnati police also plan to increase patrols in the area and equip more officers with speed radars, Officer Engelman said.
