CINCINNATI – A pair of parks will be renamed in honor of Police Officer Sonny Kim and Firefighters Daryl Gordon and Oscar Armstrong III.

The City Council signed off on a motion this week to rename East Hyde Park Commons in honor of Kim and the Queensgate Recreation Area in honor of Gordon and Armstrong.

Kim, a District 2 officer for 25 years, was killed in an ambush by a gunman in Madisonville this summer. Officials have proposed to rename East Hyde Park Commons as Police Officer Sonny Kim Memorial Park in his memory.

Gordon was also killed this year while searching for trapped residents in a smoke-filled apartment building that had recently been on fire. A 30-year veteran of the fire department, he was just months from retirement.

Armstrong was also killed in the line of duty, while battling a fire back in 2003. He was just 25. Officials have proposed to rename the Queensgate Recreation Area as Firefighters Gordon/Armstrong Memorial Park.

“The Cincinnati City Council desires to leave a lasting memorial to these public servants who put the lives of others before their own, often in dangerous situations, and ultimately laid down their own for their fellow man,” officials wrote.

The names were previously approved by the Cincinnati Recreation Commission Board. The police and firefighter unions will be working with the CRC on designs for bronze plaques to be placed in the parks, officials wrote.
