CINCINNATI -- Two people, one of them a preteen girl, were shot Tuesday night at a Mount Airy apartment complex.

Cincinnati police Capt. Dennis Swingley said a woman called 911 to report she had been shot at Forest Ridge Townhomes, an apartment complex on Hawaiian Terrace. Police on the scene discovered one of the victims was a 12-year-old girl and rushed her to Children’s Hospital.

The other victim, a 17-year-old boy, was also taken into medical treatment at Mercy Hospital.

Both children are expected to survive, Swingley said.

Nearly a dozen shell casings were found at the scene, police said.

Hawaiian Terrace is no stranger to gun violence.

Last year, when concerned residents organized installment of new streetlights in Hawaiian Terrace in an attempt to curb crime, Vice Mayor David Mann said "Hawaiian Terrace (is) filled with scores of children and with a very high crime rate."

Editorial: Mount Airy has declined more than any Cincinnati neighborhood

"We need to start telling people— the police, the authorities — who is doing what because they’re going to keep doing it," said Rhoneil DuBois, who has lived in Hawaiian Terrace for a year. “All I want is to save our kids at this point and Hawaiian Terrace does not provide the safety for me— i’m disabled-- for the elderly or the children.”

Police haven't released any information on a suspected shooter or shooters.
