CINCINNATI -- "There's nothing like" getting a card or a package from home as a service member on deployment, veteran Joe Ball said Tuesday.

"It gives you a reminder of why you're there and who you're protecting," he said. "And another reason to make sure the guys stay the task and come home."

Total Quality Logistics, a Cincinnati-based freight transportation company, hopes to send hundreds of those reminders to active-duty service members as part of Military Appreciation Month, but it needs help from the Greater Cincinnati community.

Until May 31, anyone wishing to send a message of appreciation to the United States military can create a card on the company's website. TQL will print the cards at the end of Military Appreciation Month and mail them to members of the military.

TQL corporate giving manager Corey Drushal said the card collection campaign and accompanying Hauls for Heroes fundraiser are evidence of the company's commitment to hiring veterans and supporting active duty service members.

"So many of our carriers and customers are part of the military or are veterans, so it's the right thing to do," she said. "We want to blow it up big in May."

Want to do a little more in time for Memorial Day? If you'd like to show your appreciation for the United States' soldiers in another way, you can put flags on veterans' graves with the Veterans of Foreign Wars or become a foster pet parent to soldiers' furry family members.
