CINCINNATI — Todd Portune was too ill Thursday night to attend what would have been his final meeting as a member of the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners. When the other board members dedicated part of the evening to honoring his 18 years of service to the county, they did it without him.

"His legacy and his service — his heart, his courage, his tenacity — he's gone through a lot of medical issues and he's just persevered through all of it," commissioner Denise Driehaus said. "It's a lot, it's a huge legacy, but I think it's really important to honor him."

The administration building in which the board meets will be renamed the Todd B. Portune Center for County Government Building.

Portune began serving on the commission since 2000. Before that, he served for eight years at City Hall.
