CINCINNATI — Fifth Third Bank employees were fired after they stole customer information and provided it to an outside party, spokeswoman Laura Trujillo said.

Authorities are conducting an investigation, Trujillo said. This follows an internal investigation of the “small number” of Fifth Third employees who stole the information.

It’s unclear whether any of the employees will face charges, but Trujillo said, “Fifth Third is cooperating fully with authorities in the investigation of this matter and we look forward to seeing justice served.”

Trujillo did not specify how many employees were terminated, how many customers were impacted or when exactly the theft took place.

Any Fifth Third customer who has been affected has been notified, and anyone who experienced a financial loss has been reimbursed, she said. Fifth Third will provide identity theft monitoring to anyone impacted.

“Our primary concern, as always, is for the protection of our customers’ assets and personal information,” Trujillo said in a statement. “We apologize for any inconvenience as we work to resolve this matter.”
