SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Eighth-grader Robert Casteneros took a win on his home turf in the WCPO 9 On Your Side Regional Spelling Bee at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy Saturday.

Robert, who attends school at CHCA, took fourth place in last year’s competition. He correctly spelled “immunologic” to win the Ohio region contest Saturday and earn himself a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in late May.

“I studied harder after I lost,” he said.

Later Saturday, eighth-grader Patrick Mitchell correctly spelled “brawniness” to finish a lengthy final round and win the Kentucky-Indiana region contest.

This was the sixth time in the WCPO bee for Patrick, who attends Greendale Middle School in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. He’s planning to work hard to prepare for the national bee.

“I’m gong to study as many words as I can, so I can give everybody else a run for their money,” he said.

Anyone who missed the bees can watch an edited version March 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. on WCPO.
