CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Police Department received the Compassionate Police Department Award Friday.

The award is presented by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals following an incident on May 9 involving officers James Givens and Cecilia Charron rescuing a gosling tangled in a balloon string.

PETA offers tips for helping wildlife on its website. Animal welfare activists suggest celebrating special occasions without balloons, as they usually end up polluting the environment.

The Cincinnati Police Department will receive a framed certificate from the organization.
