CINCINNATI — The family of a Cincinnati man is in mourning Thursday after he was shot to death while visiting family in Jacksonville, Florida, according to The Florida-Times Union.

Jacksonville sheriff's deputies found Johnny Marveil Mooney, 39, fatally wounded in the hotel he was staying at while visiting his brother’s family there, according to the newspaper report.

Mooney was in Florida to visit the children of one of his brothers who died of cancer in 2013. Mooney’s family told the paper Mooney promised his brother he would make sure those adult children, who lived in Jacksonville, would know they had family in Ohio who loved them.

The paper did not name the relatives they spoke with. An arrest has not been made in Mooney’s homicide. Surveillance video recorded two people running from Mooney’s hotel shortly after the shooting, according to the paper.

Family said Mooney played semi-professional football. He was one of 11 siblings and a father of a 17, 16 and 9-year-old. He was also engaged to marry.

The death of Mooney’s mother in July has compounded the family’s loss, relatives told the newspaper.
