CINCINNATI -- A worker was trapped in a backhoe Thursday afternoon when a gravel pile sloughed onto it.

The collapse occurred at about 1 p.m. on land behind Byer Steel on West North Bend Road in Carthage.

When firefighters arrived, they found the man alert, but his legs were pinned by gravel on the crushed dash.

Firefighters used two other pieces of equipment to clear the pile and then cut away the dash to free the operator.

The operator was expected to be OK, firefighters said.
