GOSHEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- It was just a normal evening on the job for Officer Dillon West as he checked businesses around town.

For Teeya Kirkland, though, it was anything but normal. Kirkland, who uses a wheelchair, had been trapped in a creek under a bridge on state Route 132 for more than 36 hours.

West heard her cries for help through his cruiser's open window at about 2:20 a.m. Sept. 26, 2017.

"I ran down there and found her down in the creek sitting down in the water," West said. "She was faint (and) couldn't really talk. Real delirious. Didn't know where she was at."

West called the fire department for help in rescuing Kirkland. On Tuesday, West was honored Tuesday for his heroic actions.

"It was by surprise. I didn't expect to get anything out of it. For me, it was just another day. Any other officer here would have done the same thing," West said.
