MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- A Middletown man assaulted a Butler County deputy and his K-9 partner Tuesday afternoon, according to Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.

Jessie Dennis, 40, threw a knife at Deputy James Davenport and kicked Davenport’s K-9 partner, Deputy Radi, in the head as they tried to detain him at about 3:30 p.m. at the Speedway gas station on Oxford State Road, Jones said.

Dennis started wrestling the deputy. Two witnesses helped Davenport subdue Dennis, and first responders transported him to Atrium Medical Center for evaluation.

Dennis stands charged with obstructing official business and disorderly conduct. Jones said Dennis will face more charges.

“This guy obviously has some serious issues,” Jones said. “I am just glad we got to him before he hurt someone else. This situation could have been much worse. It is a good feeling to know that the good citizens in this county have our backs like those two did.”

The witnesses, Deputy Davenport and K-9 Radi are all OK, Jones said.
