HAMILTON, Ohio -- Thirty-seven-year-old Calvin Simmons Jr. has died after police found him inside his residence on University Boulevard with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Police responded to 2204 University Boulevard around 3:45 a.m. Friday and transported Simmons to Fort Hamilton hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Simmons was the father of five daughters, ranging between 8 and 18 years old. His uncle, Terry Simmons, said he "had a good heart."

"I am hurt because this is uncalled for," Terry Simmons said. "There was no reason for this."

Simmons' sister, Shaquila Mathews, recalled him as a funny guy who "loved to laugh and joke."

"He had a beautiful smile, a big smile," she said.

Investigators believe this was not a random act of violence and that Simmons was targeted. No arrests have been made at this time.

Simmons' uncle said Simmons was known to help people in the community with food and money, and he thought someone robbed Simmons to buy heroin.

The Investigations Division is asking if anyone has any information reference this incident to please call (513) 868-5811 ext 2002.

"It's frustrating because so many people are losing their lives," Mathews said. "Families are losing their lives and here, recently within the last couple of months, it seems like Hamilton has been plagued with senseless violence."
