VERONA, Ky. — One person was killed in a Wednesday afternoon crash in front of Florence Speedway, according to the Boone County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the three-vehicle crash near the speedway at 12234 US-42 just before 2:30 p.m.

Police said it appeared the driver of a Toyota Corolla failed to negotiate a curve on the highway and went off the road. He then overcorrected to get back on the road and crossed the center line, sideswiping a Toyota Camry before continuing to slide into a Ford F-350, police said.

Verona EMS pronounced the driver of the Corolla dead at the scene, and police identified him as 18-year-old Joshua Allen of Independence.

The driver of the F-350 was transported to St. Elizabeth Florence with minor injuries. The driver of the Camry was not injured.

Speed and wet road conditions appear to have been factors in the crash, police said.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash. No charges have been filed at this time, and all parties are cooperating with authorities.

US-42, closed for the investigation, reopened before 6 p.m.
