BURLINGTON, Ky. – The Boone County Sheriff’s Office warned residents Thursday about scammers claiming to be deputies.

The imposter calls the victim, saying that deputies have an arrest warrant for the victim for missing a grand jury assignment, real deputies explained. The imposter tells the victim that “they are receiving a courtesy call because they are a good citizen” and sends the victim to purchase a “secured voucher,” which is really just a rechargeable gift card.

The imposter initially tells the victim to bring the card to the sheriff’s office in Burlington, but then says the victim can just scratch off the back and convey the number, providing the funds to the scammer.

Sheriff Michael A. Helmig said anyone receiving a call like that should hang up and call the dispatch center at 859-371-1234.
