HEBRON, Ky. -- A firefighter suffered second- and third-degree burns at a Northern Kentucky firehouse Sunday night.

The firefighter is in serious but stable condition, according to Mike Fronimos, Hebron Fire Protection District spokesman.

He'd been cleaning up yard waste and other debris at Fire Station No. 1 and burning it in a barrel, Fronimos said.

At about 8:20 p.m., he used a flammable liquid. That caused a flash fire, Fronimos said.

A Hebron ambulance took him to St. Elizabeth Florence, and then a medical helicopter took him to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The firefighter has burns over a quarter of his upper body.

The district isn't identifying him out of respect for his privacy, Fronimos said.
