FLORENCE, Ky. -- A mother was dropping her son off for daycare at Florence Christian Church Wednesday when a man tried to climb into her car and drive away, she said.

“I always leave my car running because I’m just taking (my son) in and bringing him back out,” Kayla Brewer said.

If not for a friend who accompanied Brewer on the errand and managed to frighten the man off, he might have gotten away in her car.

Brewer isn’t the only Florence woman to have recently been the victim of an attempted robbery, and she believes the man who tried to climb inside her car is the same man suspected of robbing two other Florence women within an hour of one another on the same day.

Shelley Wheaton, who owns Emerson’s Bakery on Dixie Highway, said one of these robberies happened right ouside of her store. According to police, a man matching the description of the person who tried to climb inside Brewer’s car also snatched a woman’s wallet outside of the bakery and stole another victim’s purse on nearby Fair Court.

The suspect has not been identified, police said. In the meantime, Rev. Diana Hodges Batzka encouraged her parishioners to take extra steps to ensure the safety of their personal belongings.

"Lock your cars,” she said. "If you leave your purse inside, tuck it away."

Florence police requested that anyone with information about these crimes or the suspect contact them.
