Former House Speaker John Boehner described the GOP's nominee for president as "barely a Republican."

Donald Trump "became a Republican in order to run," the Reading native told VICE News' founder Shane Smith in a interview excerpt released Tuesday. The clip previews the full discussion with Boehner, which will run at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on HBO's VICE News Tonight.

Trump is "not a conservative," Boehner said, adding that the GOP nominee wouldn't have been his first, second or even third choice; however, that hasn't changed Boehner's determination to vote with his party.

"His ideas, when you can get to them, are frankly more in the direction that I would want the country to go to than Hillary Clinton," Boehner said. "I like Hillary Clinton. I’ve known her for a long time and worked with her. She’s not a bad person, but it would be more of the policies that we’ve seen with the Obama administration."

Boehner resigned in October 2015 after years of wrestling with the expectations of tea party conservatives who abhorred his tendencies toward deal-making with President Barack Obama's administration on key issues.
