CINCINNATI -- Target's store near the University of Cincinnati will open later this month.

The location at 235 Calhoun St., part of U Square at the Loop, will have a grand opening at 8 a.m. July 23. A soft opening is set for July 19.

The UC Calhoun Target will have fresh groceries (including grab-and-go food), home merchandise (with a focus on dorm and apartment living, obviously), a health and beauty section, men’s and women’s apparel and accessories and tech accessories, as well as order pick-up.

At about 17,500 square feet, it's the Minneapolis-based retailer's first small-format store in Ohio. The location will employ about 70 people.

Target's opening comes as competition ramps up nearby: It's just a few blocks from Kroger's new Corryville store and not far from Clifton Market, which is having cash flow troubles less than six months after opening.

The city of Cincinnati had lobbied Target to open a Downtown store at the International Council of Shopping Centers convention in Las Vegas in May 2016.
