DAYTON, Ohio -- A man suspected of shooting at Dayton, Ohio police officers had to be rescued from the Great Miami River after a chase.

Officers tried to pull the man over for a traffic stop early Sunday in the city's Five Oaks neighborhood, Maj.Eric Henderson told WHIO.

At some point, Henderson said, the suspect fired on officers and drove off. He eventually went over an embankment and into the river.

First responders helped the suspect out of his vehicle, and Henderson said he was taken to a hospital because of the water's temperature.

"We do not know why at this time our officers were shot at, but it's a very serious crime. Fortunately none of our officers were hurt, and we were able to make an arrest of this suspect," Henderson told WHIO.

A tow truck removed his vehicle from the river. The suspect's name has not been released.
