A Mason mason stands charged with attempted murder and felonious assault after attacking a deputy who came to perform a wellness check at his home on Monday, Warren County Deputy Barry K. Riley announced Wednesday afternoon.

Lance Runion, 56, was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds when Riley announced the charges against him.

According to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Sara Vaught had been called to Hunt Club Drive on Monday evening to check on a person inside Runion’s home.
Runion shot at her when she arrived, deputies said.

He missed. Vaught shot back, striking him several times. Runion would receive emergency care at the scene before being taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where deputies said he remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.

“Due to his condition we do not know when he will be able to make a court appearance,” Riley wrote in a news release announcing the charges against Runion.

Vaught was placed on administrative leave pending a routine investigation of her actions during the shooting.
