Sheriff's Office: Inmate tried to hire another inmate to kill his pregnant ex-girlfriend

CLERMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- An inmate tried to hire a fellow inmate to kill his pregnant ex-girlfriend, according to the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office.

Robert Clowers, 45, of Batavia Township, was indicted Thursday on two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, authorities said.

An inmate told corrections staff on Feb. 5 that Clowers had solicited him to kill the woman, whom Clowers is accused of assaulting and kidnapping, so it would be more difficult for Clowers to be prosecuted in court. Authorities said Clowers did not solicit other inmates.

This is the second time a Clermont County inmate has been indicted on a murder-for-hire plot in less than a month. Authorities said 38-year-old Joseph Addison, of Union Township, solicited the help of another inmate in murdering an 11-year-old girl last month.

Clowers will be moved to administrative segregation for the duration of his stay at the Clermont County Jail to ensure he doesn’t have contact with other inmates, and he will only be allowed to talk to his attorney on the phone.

Clowers is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Clowers also faces charges of felonious assault and kidnapping as the result of a January investigation, authorities said.
