OWENTON, Ky. -- An Owenton police officer was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree rape, the Owenton News-Herald reported.
Rufus Shearer, 59, was immediately suspended, Owenton Police Chief Terry Gentry said, and he surrendered his firearm, badge and cruiser at the department.
Shearer is being held at the Carroll County Detention Center. Online jail records show he was booked into the jail just before 1 p.m. Thursday.
According to the Owenton Police Department, the Kentucky State Police post in Campbellsburg is handling the investigation.
The News-Herald reported that Owenton Mayor David "Milkweed" Wotier declined to comment on the case.
