COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A Cincinnati man shot and killed his ex-wife before fatally shooting himself early Wednesday.

Hamilton County Sheriff's deputies are investigating what they called a murder-suicide at the Heritage Hill Estates apartment complex on Wooster Pike.

Deputies say they received 911 calls from several neighbors and found a man and a woman shot dead inside a vacant apartment at about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday. Nobody else was in the apartment or injured, police said.

John Smith, 47, confronted Anna Smith, 53, outside her apartment as she was leaving to go to work, deputies said in a news release. The verbal altercation turned physical as John grabbed Anna. She ran to another nearby building and tried to hide in a vacant apartment. He found her and shot her multiple times before shooting himself.

"He's shooting at her! Oh, Lord have mercy," a woman told the 911 dispatcher.

According to the 911 calls, witnesses heard one gunshot and a woman screaming in the parking lot. That witness also reported seeing a man pointing a gun at a woman on the ground before hearing two more gunshots.

The couple had recently divorced, according to deputies. Anna Smith moved to Columbia Township away from John, who lived in Madisonville.

Deputies asked anyone with information to call the Criminal Investigative Section at 513-851-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
