NORWOOD, Ohio -- Police arrested a man who they said punished a child so severely it caused life-threatening injuries.

Jaquan Jones, 19, was caring for the child on April 30 when he punished the child in a way that created "a substantial risk of serious physical harm," police said in court records.

Staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center found the child suffered injuries that included lacerations to several internal organs, police said.

The child had been in Jones' care at the time of the injuries. He told a Job & Family Services worker that he had struck the child in the chest, according to court records.

Police arrested Jones Monday and charged him with endangering children.
