NKY woman pleads guilty in fake cancer case

COVINGTON, Ky. -- A woman accused of lying about having cancer pleaded guilty to theft by deception, according to the Kenton County prosecutor.

Kelly Schmahl faces a sentence of as much as 1-5 years, Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders said Wednesday. 

Between June 2016 and March 2017, Schmahl told her roommate and caregiver she had cancer, according to court documents. 

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 4.
