CAMPBELLSBURG, Ky. -- A man wanted in an Owen County shooting was caught hours away in New Mexico, Kentucky State Police announced Wednesday.

Troopers said Derrick Mays Thomas, 23, shot a man during an altercation Feb. 17. The victim survived the shooting.

Thomas is facing a charge of first-degree assault.

Wednesday morning, Troopers issued a notice that Thomas was still being sought by Kentucky State Police and warned that he was considered armed and dangerous. They said Thomas was likely traveling with his girlfriend, Elizabeth Neal, and their 1- and 3-year-old children.

Later, Troopers said that Thomas and Neal were apprehended without incident in Gallup, New Mexico. Neal was being held on charges unrelated to the shooting, troopers said.

The two children were safe.
