CINCINNATI -- A man who police said admitted to striking a young girl has been charged with murder.

Recardo Woods, 19, remains at the Hamilton County Justice Center after his initial arrest last week on a charge of felonious assault.

A grand jury indicted him Tuesday on counts of aggravated murder, murder, two counts of felonious assault and two counts of endangering children. All are felonies.

Police say Woods backhanded 15-month-old Kassidy Smith while she and her 3-month-old sister Korri were in his care, and that both were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The girls' mother, Danielle Stallworth, said Kassidy had no brain activity. The child died at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center hours after Woods made his first court appearance April 9.

Both off-camera and behind glass, Stallworth pleaded with the judge to keep Woods locked up.

He was ordered held on a half-million-dollar bond.

She added that she trusted Woods with her kids, calling him their uncle. The family is shocked something like this would happen.

"Watch who y'all bring your babies around. Please, just watch who y'all have around your kids," she said.

Stallworth said donations are being accepted in Kassidy’s name at any Fifth Third Bank location. Those who wish to donate should specify they want to donate to the savings fund for Kassidy Smith.

Kassidy’s funeral is Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Cumminsville, 3640 Roll Ave., Cincinnati. Family visitation is at 10 a.m., a public visitation is at 11 a.m. and the funeral starts at 12
