MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- A Butler County man is facing charges after authorities said he bit his girlfriend's infant daughter and threw the girl.

Nicholas Jones, 24, is charged with felonious assault, Sheriff Richard Jones announced Wednesday. The case will go to a grand jury Thursday.

The 16-month-old victim suffered a severe laceration to her chin and multiple bruises on her face in the incident on Aug. 18, authorities said.

"There is no reason for anyone to hurt a child," Jones said in a written statement. "We were told she was punished for taking food from another child in the home. It is senseless and we will be working closely with the Butler County Prosecutors Office to see that the little girl gets justice."

Eight children are living in the home, authorities said. Butler County Children Services is involved in the case.

The girl's mother is not being charged and has cooperated with the investigation, authorities said.
