MENTOR, Ky. -- A judge set bond at $1 million for 36-year-old John "Will" Allender and ordered he have no contact with his six children after he was charged with murdering his wife Tuesday afternoon.

In court Thursday morning, Allender's attorney said the six children have been with their paternal grandparents since police found 37-year-old Cheryl Allender shot to death around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. A small, yellow church bus took them away from their home in the 11000 block of Mary Ingles Highway.

Officers arrested John later Tuesday evening and took him to the Campbell County Jail. He is due back in court on June 1.

Neighbors told WCPO they used to enjoy watching the couple's children run around the Allender property, ride bikes and come across the street to jump on the trampoline.

Pastor Stuart Chowning at the Mentor Baptist Church, where the family attended services, is asking the community to keep the Allender children in their thoughts and prayers.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to benefit the children.
