BURLINGTON, Ky. — A Boone County judge denied a request to reduce bond for an 18-year-old accused of rape.

Jacob Walter appeared in court for a pretrial hearing Monday morning. He's charged with rape and two counts of sodomy after deputies said he violently raped an 18-year-old woman earlier this month.

Walter's attorney asked Judge Jeffrey Smith to reduce Walter's bond from $250,000 to $100,000 or $125,000 on the condition that Walter be placed on electronic monitoring if he posted bond. Smith kept Walter's bond at $250,000.

"I do find that these allegations do ... pose a danger to the community if the defendant were released at this juncture, based on the severity of the charges and the allegations that have been testified to here today," Smith said.

Smith also said he was referring the case to a grand jury for consideration.

Walter is 7 feet tall and weighs 300 pounds. He is the son of former Bengal Joe Walter and had at one time been committed to play basketball at Xavier University after playing for Covington Catholic, but he never materialized on the team or enrolled at classes at Xavier.

Walter was accused of another rape in May, just weeks before he turned 18. He was registered as a juvenile sex offender after that case.
