NEWPORT, Ky.  - A Newport man could be facing felony charges in three states after leading police on a wild chase and trying to escape by doing a U-turn on I-275 Friday.

David Smiddy

David Smiddy intentionally rammed three police cruisers while making a U-turn into the southbound lanes in Whitewater Township, according to court documents. No one was hurt there.

The chase started in Newport and went into Indiana and then to Ohio, according to court documents.

Investigators say the whole thing started with a domestic disturbance in Newport. Smiddy struck a Newport police officer who was trying to apprehend him as he fled. That officer was not seriously hurt.

Smiddy was taken to a hospital in Dearborn County and then to the Dearborn Count jail.

Investigators say he told them he ran because he didn’t want to go back to jail.

Smiddy faces at least one count of felonious assault in Ohio and is expected to be charged in Kentucky and Indiana.
