PEBBLE TWP., Ohio — A homicide investigation is now open in Pike County after a bag confirmed to contain decomposed human remains was discovered, according to police.

Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader confirmed his office is conducting a homicide investigation in the area of Buchanan Road and Trego Road, in Pebble Township.

Mushroom hunters discovered the large bag shortly before 3 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Sheriff's officials responded to the scene and examined the bag, discovered just a few yards off of a roadway, police said. The Pike County coroner arrived at the scene and confirmed the remains found inside the bag were human.

Ohio BCI officials assisted in processing the scene and collecting evidence.

The body will be transported to Montgomery County for an autopsy, which police said will confirm the gender of the deceased, but identification of the remains is still pending.
