FLORENCE, Ky. – When a man jumped over the counter, pulled a gun and ordered a pharmacist to hand over the drugs he wrote on a piece of paper, even a police captain was surprised to see how far someone would go to get prescription drugs.

"It’s pretty desperate … being this bold and just jumping the counter and holding up a pharmacist like that at gunpoint.  That’s getting a little bit out there,” said Florence PD Capt. Tom Grau.

The robbery took place about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the Florence Walgreen on Mall Road. The robber filled a backpack with pills, ordered the pharmacist to the floor, stole cash and then ran off.

Robbery suspects enters Florence Walgreen, police say.

Grau said the prescription drug problem in the Tri-State hasn't decreased despite the popularity of heroin.

"Obviously, heroin is a big focus now, but pills have been a big issue for the past five to 10 years,” Grau said.

The pharmacist was shaken but OK, Grau said.

“Hopefully we’ll get some closure for him and track this guy down," Grau said.
