John Glenn, one of the original seven Mercury astronauts and a former Ohio senator, died Dec. 8 at the age of 95. Glenn was the first American to orbit Earth during his flight aboard Friendship 7 in 1962.

He was elected to the United States Senate in 1974 and served until his retirement in 1999. Glenn returned to space when, as a sitting senator, he flew onboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1998.
