COLUMBUS -- The first case of the Zika virus contracted through sexual transmission was reported in Ohio Wednesday.

A 61-year-old Lucas County woman contracted the Zika virus after her husband tested positive for the virus, according to the Ohio Department of Health. They said he contracted the virus after he traveled to a country where the Zika virus is prevalent.

The CDC reported an additional 12 Zika cases transmitted through sexual intercourse. They also reported 16 cases of Zika in Ohio.

Eighty percent of those infected do not have any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they are often mild, and include fever, rash, joint and muscle pain, red eyes and headache. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon. However, there is an association between Zika virus and certain birth defects.
