COVINGTON, Ky. -- A driver struck and killed a child on a bicycle on E. 32nd Street Friday evening, Covington Police Chief Rob Nader said.

"There are terrible circumstances," Nader said. "It's very upsetting to the family, very upsetting to the whole neighborhood."

According to the Covington Police Department, 45-year-old Christopher Wells drove away after striking and killing the boy. He was caught at a nearby shopping center and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal traffic collision, which is a felony in the state of Kentucky.

"I just don't see how someone could hit a child and continue to drive off," neighbor Netisha Conn said.

Eli Kindt, 6, was the victim, his parents said.

"He had two little brothers that he loved to death," mother Casey Jones said. "He was a great kid. He was real sweet and loving."

Jones said drivers are careless on the street, where children frequently play.

"So all I ask is please when you drive where there's kids, please slow down. It's not worth all this, all the pain and suffering," she said.

Neighbors said Kindt played on the Northern Kentucky Bengal Tigers, a youth football team that included other children in the neighborhood.

Dawson Heringdon and Michael James said they had planned to play with Kindt the next day.

"He's a nice friend," Heringdon said. "He played games with me."

"I felt really sad and my heart was broken," James said.
