MT. ORAB, Ohio – Two would-be burglars picked the wrong time and the wrong place.

The armed homeowner, his son and the family dog were home when the two broke into a house on Kress Road about 10 p.m. Friday, the sheriff's office said.

The homeowner shot at the suspects and the dog attacked them, too, but the homeowner could not tell if he wounded the burglars. The two got away on foot, but they left empty-handed.

Now deputies are on the lookout for anybody seeking treatment for gunshot wounds or dog bites. Surveillance video  may also identify the men, Det. Rick Haney said.

"There was a security system on the house [and] a camera attached to that, " Haney said. "We're in the process of getting those videos downloaded that will probably show our bad guys on it."

Haney said the barking dogs warned the homeowner.

"They got alerted by the family dogs that something strange was going on," he said.

Haney said he doesn't recommend shooting at home invaders except as a last resort.

"Property can be replaced. We don't want to have to get to that point, but we want you to stay safe," he said. "Get yourself and your family locked into a bedroom, call 911, keep a cellphone on you."

If you have any information that might lead to the suspects, contact Haney at (937) 378-4435, ext. 114.
