FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky House has passed a bill that would make the hard-hit coal industry eligible for state economic incentives.
House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins said Friday the measure would "right a wrong" by letting coal companies seek the same economic incentives already available for other businesses and industries.
The measure cleared the House on an 89-0 vote and now goes to the Senate.
Adkins, a Sandy Hook Democrat, says the bill wouldn't singlehandedly lead to a turnaround in the coalfields. But he says it would make the incentives available to coal operators when there is a comeback.
If the bill becomes law, coal mining or processing companies would be able to seek approval for various tax incentives rewarding job creation and investment.
