CINCINNATI -- Hays-Porter Elementary in the West End has faced its share of challenges: 98 percent of the school's 400 students come from low-income families.

Two local businesses want to give Hays-Porter students a fresh start next school year. Appreciation Financial and Great American Insurance Group are sprucing up the inside and outside of the school Tuesday,

"We're just trying to give back to the neighborhoods that matter the most," said Keith Spivey, vice president of Appreciation Financial. "We're excited to be here and make sure that this school gets the touch-ups that it needs to help it continue to do what it's doing."

Volunteers plan to add a tech-themed mural leading to the school's technology center, repainting the outdoor play area, decorative mailboxes for books, fresh landscaping and a welcome message at the front of the school. The school will also have new equipment, according to a news release from Appreciation Financial.

When asked for a suggestion, Cincinnati Public Schools recommended Hays-Porter receive this special makeover.

Volunteers hope to finish their work around noon Tuesday.
