<p>CINCINNATI. July 12, 2017. Henry joined Bibi and Fiona in the outdoor pool for the second time Wednesday morning. They were out for about two hours before the zoo opened, and did well together. Bibi watched out for Fiona and intervened when Henry was too close or too rough. Fiona did not shy away from Henry. She initiated many of their interactions and stayed close to both parents most of the time they were out.</p>

CINCINNATI -- Henry, the Cincinnati Zoo's adult male hippopotamus and father to Fiona, is fighting an infection.

The zoo said staff discovered the infection from blood tests. Caretakers are trying to fight it with antibiotics, but it's not easy giving medicine to a 3,500-pound animal with thick skin.

Henry hadn't been feeling well back in August, though he seemed to bounce back a bit.

He spent Saturday outside with Fiona and Bibi, Fiona's mother. Vets will do a followup exam in a few weeks to see if the treatment has been effective.

 

Henry, 36, came to Cincinnati from Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri.
