FLORENCE, Ky – Imagine eating breakfast at the Waffle House at 5 a.m. Thursday and hearing several gun shots from the parking lot.

Customers and employees got a rude awakening when police found 42-year-old Juan Vega of Fairfield, Ohio, dying in the driver’s seat of a silver Jeep. There were multiple bullet holes in the driver's window.

"It was shocking,”  said Melissa McKinnon, who lives nearby.

Several hours later, Florence police were still trying to figure out the circumstances behind the fatal shooting at the restaurant on Burlington Pike just off of I-71/75.  They said they didn't have a suspect or a motive.

Neighbors found the news unsettling. They said something like this doesn't happen in that area.

"I’m honestly surprised because normally this is a really safe area," said David Mahan.

"It’s crazy," said McKinnon. "Things like that don’t normally happen on this side of the river really."

"I just don’t get why you would want to shoot somebody at 5 o’clock in the morning,” Mahan said.

WCPO asked police if drugs might be a factor, but they wouldn’t comment.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Florence police.
